Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to close the trolley bus services forever, Kantipur daily reported.
KMC, which had got the responsibility to operate the services few years ago, decided to close the services as it could not expand the services, pay for unnecessary staff and bear losses continually.
“We decided to close it forever as there was not a single dime in profit,” said Deepak Koirala, assistant executive chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan city. “We can’t bear losses forever.”
It has decided to dismiss the staff working for the Trolley bus office and handover all properties related to the service including the station building in Minbhawan and old trolley buses to the government.
KMC called 28 employees including technicians, drivers and helpers working for the Trolley bus office and asked them not to come for work from next month. It has decided to give them three months pay as a severance pay.
Trolley bus services, once a popular mode of transportation from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur, used to operate services from Tripureshwar to Surya Binayak in the initial days, while it had shortened its route in the recent years.
Trolley buses are considered environment friendly as they operate with electricity cutting down carbon emission to the atmosphere. nepalnews.com
