Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to close the trolley bus services forever, Kantipur daily reported.

KMC, which had got the responsibility to operate the services few years ago, decided to close the services as it could not expand the services, pay for unnecessary staff and bear losses continually.

“We decided to close it forever as there was not a single dime in profit,” said Deepak Koirala, assistant executive chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan city. “We can’t bear losses forever.”

It has decided to dismiss the staff working for the Trolley bus office and handover all properties related to the service including the station building in Minbhawan and old trolley buses to the government.

KMC called 28 employees including technicians, drivers and helpers working for the Trolley bus office and asked them not to come for work from next month. It has decided to give them three months pay as a severance pay.

Trolley bus services, once a popular mode of transportation from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur, used to operate services from Tripureshwar to Surya Binayak in the initial days, while it had shortened its route in the recent years.

Trolley buses are considered environment friendly as they operate with electricity cutting down carbon emission to the atmosphere. nepalnews.com

This wouldn't have happened if the Mayor was still the venerable Keshav Sthapit.

It is indeed sad news that the trolley buses are closed. This could be one of
the most appropriate means of public transport specially for Kathmandu valley.
It is a shame that the grant ets could not be maintained and developed. Can that
be run by some other agencies? Government should realy explore the all
possibilities to keep it running. Beaurocrats and ministers should refrain from
looking only lucrative means, where they can possibly benefitted personally.

shortage of petrol supply.our nearest north neighbour friend china came forward
and declared trolley bus servive conduction signal and managed all coasts as
free help to nepal.from tripureswar to suryabinayak bhaktapur it was running
successfully for about 2decades.it was a new trnsportation system intertaining
people supporting quality transport for hand to mouth sbsisting people.no body
complained chines help as useless ,unnecessary, not fulfilling public needs.our
governments who boasted once upon trolley bus run ,justifying his induction in
cabinet delivered long long speeches blocking programmes of radio and ntv .now
does not speak a singal word about its utility and services.our government cant
save ,protect and develop means gifted by friendly country.the wonder is ,eve...

Everyone knows that trolley bus services was one of the best, reliable, economic
and environment friendly services in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Trolley bus was
the just one best thing to count in Kathmandu which also dismissed by the
Government. How Nepal approved Kyoto Protocol, how can Nepal fight for green
revolution if such activities is done by the Government instead of keeping
contunue. If this trend and culture will go on, one day Nepal will no more for
good things, it will count in no one position for the worst things.

its not a good idea to stop trollybus service, bkoz its eco friendly,by using it
we can reduce polluation rate and demand of fuel in the city, government must
handover it to private sector for smoothly service,we must act for it.

Symbol of inefficient and corrupted leadership..for sure. Otherwise how is it
possible to run the same service by Kommune( Municipality) with profit in
developed countries...

Instead of coming up the progress and development, it is going down.Chinese had
established the easy transportation system at time. But all the sucessive govt's
of Nepal did not pay any attention for its further development nor did it
expanded for survival. I do not blame this govt only.
