PM Nepal had gone to Hong Kong with members of his delegation including deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Sujata Koirala, finance minister Surendra Pandey and energy minister Prakash Sharan Mahat from Shanghai, Thursday morning.

PM Nepal had gone to China leading a 15-member delegation on December 26. A separate team of businessmen from Nepal had joined the PM's delegation in Beijing.

During his visit Nepal held bilateral talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and other high-level dignitaries of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party.

PM Nepal and his team also visited Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and Xian, capital of Shaanxi province.

Two national level agreements, one on economic and technical cooperation and the other on youth exchange programmes, were signed during the visit. In addition, many business deals were also signed between Nepali and the Chinese businessmen.

The Chinese government pledged to increase annual support to Nepal from Rs 1 billion to Rs 1.5 billion during the visit. Likewise, the Chinese government has also committed to cut tariffs in various products exported to China from Nepal in a bid to lower the trade imbalance.

This is the first visit of PM Nepal to China after assuming office in May and the only official visit of a Nepali head of government or state in 13 years. The high-level visit after a long gap is expected to consolidate ties between Nepal and China.

PM Nepal also invited the Chinese President, Prime Minister and the governor of Shaanxi province for a visit to Nepal in appropriate time.

Reports say, the Chinese Premier and the President have expressed their interest to visit Nepal. Foreign affairs sources say, the dates will be confirmed through diplomatic Channels.

President Ram Baran Yadav is also likely to visit China in March, next year. nepalnews.com

Why are we continuing this psychophantic and wasteful custom of sending
officials to the airport to beed farewell and welcome back PMs and Generals.
Surely these officials have better things to do than currying favour from their
superiors. This is a continuation of the practise of the neopatrimonial Shah
regime. It must stop and the press should be the lead in this.
