NRN Korea, Korea Chapter of Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and Society of Nepali Students in Korea (SoNSiK) are jointly organising an international workshop 'Power Nepal 2009' in Seoul on July 31st, 2009 with an aim of bringing together the investors, engineers, scientists/experts and policy makers in the field of hydro-power and energy development of Nepal.
According to a statement, the workshop is expected to take a vital role in linking energy experts of the two countries and eventually contributing to the economic development of Nepal.
Nepal is facing severe electricity crisis since as the governments in past failed to establish strategic development of power resources in Nepal, despite availability of immense potential for commercially viable capacity of 42,000 MW hydropower. The situation has seriously affected the Nepali economy and it is anticipated that this situation will continue for significant span of time. More than 60% of the total population still has no access of electricity.
Apart from this, Nepal is also lagging behind in exploring its potential on such renewable energy resources as solar power, wind power, biomass and the like in which Nepal can benefit from the provisions of clean development mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) or carbon funds being promoted by various organizations in order to obtain funding for new projects that reduce the green house gas emissions.
The Government's plan of developing 10,000MW of hydropower in coming 10 years and the Nepal Electricity Crisis Mitigation Action Plan 2065 show government's commitment to power development in Nepal.
The statement further said there is growing interest of Korean investors and project developers in power development in Nepal. Hyundai's successful completion of Modi Khola Hydroelectric Project (15 MW) has been followed by a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) made by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Nepal Electrical Authority (NEA) to develop 42MW in Upper Modi Khoa Project in Nepal. Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. is going to start construction of 30MW Chameliya Hydroelectric Project in Nepal.
“Power Nepal 2009 will be a wonderful platform for investors, engineers, scientists/experts and policy makers in the field of hydro-power and energy development of Nepal, linking the energy experts from Korea and Nepal,” says Er. Tenzi Sherpa, coordinator of the workshop and member of International Coordination Council of Non Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA).
The Nepali embassy in Korea is also supporting the workshop. nepalnews.com
