With the construction of the diversion tunnel, the major construction work of MWSP is expected to be finished. The tunnel will bring 170 million litres of water per day to Kathmandu Valley.
"At a time when all other options to provide safe drinking water to the growing population of the valley is proving to be unviable, the Melamchi Drinking Water Project has emerged as the only reliable solution to the acute water crisis in the valley," PM Nepal said speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Sundarijal which was attended by representatives from the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB), government officials including national and international stake holders.
He also said the government had given the project top priority and hoped that after the project gets completed and MWSP comes into operation "the nation's capital would no longer have to face acute water crisis during every dry and winter period."
"Not only that, unpolluted water will flow in Bagmati river and a very positive effect will be seen in the living standard of people of Kathmandu," he said.
He, however, said it was very unfortunate that the construction work on the canal couldn't start on time because of frequent obstructions in the past and urged stakeholders to do their bit for timely execution of the project.
The China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation has won the contract to construct the canal from Melamchi to Sundarijal by September 2013. Construction cost of the tunnel is estimated at Rs 4.28 billion.
The Rs 17 billion ADB funded project is expected to come into full operation by December 2013 and promises to end Kathmandu valley's water woes.
Constructions of various components of the project is underway at six locations, including Sundarijal where a Waste Water Treatment Plant is being constructed. nepalnews.com
