The Nepali women's football team earned some respect for Nepal's shameful performance in the team events in the 11th SA Games by securing an emphatic 8-0 win over Sri Lanka at the Banglabandhu Stadium on Tuesday.
Jamuna Gurung, captain of Nepali women's team, lead from the front by scoring a hat-trick in the marvelous day for women's football. She hit the back of the net on 46th, 57th and 62nd minute while Anu Lama scored twice on 33rd and 40th minute, Sajana Rana on 39th minute, Laxmi Paudel on 82nd minute and Ranjana Darji on 83rd minute.
With the win, Nepal's chances of making it to the finals has grown stronger. With 6 points, Nepal is ahead of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Nepal faces favourites India in their next Round Robin Fixture. India has won all their matches till now.
The much-needed win came on the day when Sri Lanka thrashed Nepal 15-1 in men's hockey in yet another shameful performance by the latter after losing to world powerhouse India and Pakistan in its earlier outings.
The win also compensated to some extent Nepal's bitter loss against the Maldives in the men's football match on Monday. nepalnews.com
