Poachers have killed two rhinos and robbed them off their precious horns in a span of ten days in Chitwan National Park (CNP), Nagarik daily reported.

A male rhino was found in Temple Tiger area on September 2, while a female rhino was found in Krishnasar Community Forest of Nawalparasi on September 12. Both rhinos were without their horns.

CPN management has detained four persons for investigation following the incident.

CNP has become a hub of poaching. Poachers have killed at least nine rhinos since January this year. Till then, there were 408 rhinos in CNP.

Although there are 47 police posts and an army brigade in the CNP premises, which covers and area of 932 sq. km, they have not been able to stop poaching. nepalnews.com

There used to be ~600 rhinos and more than 100 army posts. But thanks to
maoists, it was reduced to 32 but recently increased to 47 which is good but not
enough to prevent poaching. Rhinos are our pride, heritage and history and we
should whatever it takes to preserve them for our future generations. Not to
mention, tourists flock to CNP to view these animals in their natural habitat.
Thus, they act as strong magnets to draw tourists from industrialized nations. I
wish I was the head of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. I
would have spent at least 15 days in National parks working in the feild and
with local people rather than sitting in KTM office and carressing that pot
bellies. Dhikkar cha hamro every system lai.

I very much suspect that the culprit might be from the sorrouding uniformed
personnel who can colaborate with the poachers for some percent of the profit
from this cruelty action

There are no police posts in Chitwan NP.

There is not an army brigade in CNP
- it is a battalion.

Please try to verify facts and be accurate.

There should be tough regulation on animal poaching. The army and police
personnel should be motivated and educated in the field. Without their and the
locals help i'm afraid wildlife will vanish. Then we'll have to become the wild
animals in the jungles.

Who dares to undertake such highly risk and heavily guarded wild life other than
the people who are very familiar with the locality, the movement of the animals
and the guards.

Who knows it might be the same national park guards
?????????????????????????????

Please check out also these guys.
