PLCs are a community-based mechanism to protect women, children, and socially-excluded groups from violence, abuse, exploitation and discrimination. Most of the cases they deal with include domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape, trafficking, early marriage, witchcraft, polygamy and property disputes.
The support will allow UNICEF to expand PLCs from the current 23 districts to all 75 in the country, reaching out to 8.5 million people residing in 1,300 Village Development Committees.
"The paralegal committees will be an excellent vehicle to help join up efforts to address gender-based violence across government, civil society, and development partners," Head of DFID Nepal Sarah Sanyahumbi said.
Similarly, UN Resident Coordinator Robert Piper said," These paralegal committees have demonstrated great impact on empowering women within their own communities and improving access to services and information."
The new financial aid will support the UNICEF-led programme to halve the percentage of women experiencing gender-based violence by 2012.
Likewise, it aims to empower 19,500 people (95 per cent of which are women) to claim their protection rights apart from resolving 39,000 cases involving women and their families. nepalnews.com
