To mark World Everest Day, the Children's Rights Committee of Lalitpur Metropolitan Municipality Ward no. 26 orchestrated a climbing festival, paying homage to the iconic ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on May 29, 1953. In line with Lalitpur Metropolitan City’s centennial jubilations, Ms. Kalpana Maharjan, a world-record holder Everest climber, proudly raised Lalitpur's flag on the summit of the world's tallest peak in 2019.

The event, dedicated to honoring Kalpana Maharjan's extraordinary accomplishment on World Everest Day, drew eager participation from children who received her expert guidance while scaling walls. A one-day introductory climbing program was arranged for students from every community school under Mahalakshmi Municipality. Furthermore, the Ganesh Mavi School Management Committee of Ward no. 8 in Godavari Municipality, along with other entities, commemorated Everest Day by hosting various events on different occasions.

In the competition, held in the Pasang Lhamu Climbing Centre at Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu, among Ward no. 8 of Godavari Municipality, students from Ganesh Mavi School participated fervently, with a total of 60 contestants. Dipesh Danuwar secured first place among the boys, followed by Arun Danuwar in second place, and Dipendra Danuwar in third place.

Likewise, Sansheela Tamang clinched the top position among the girls, with Sarita (Indra) Danuwar securing second place and Mariam Thokkar in third place. Cash prizes, medals, and certificates were awarded to acknowledge the achievements of the winners.

Kalpana Maharjan's triumphant flag hoisting on Everest in 2019, representing all three municipalities, served as the inspiration behind this celebratory competition, honoring the spirit of mountaineering and community unity.
