Farmers from Bhojpur say that they are engaged in commercial kiwi farming as the market demand is good and they can earn better than compared to other crops.

According to the Agriculture Knowledge Center, Bhojpur, kiwi can be cultivated at an altitude of 1,500 to 2,400 meters, and the fruit is useful for uric acid and ulcer patients. Although 400-500 kg of kiwi are produced annually from one orchard, the record of the total production from the district is not kept.

Navin Rai of Nagi Municipality said that they are planting more than 150 kiwi saplings commercially. Rai also said that he aims to earn twice the income with kiwis than he did with other crops. He said, "Kiwi production has gone well so far. There was no significant income from maize and potatoes. But now I have been earning well."

Rai started kiwi farming by bringing seedlings from Ilam. He said that, since cardamom and chili can be cultivated along with kiwi, one can reap multiple benefits. He said that he expects to earn up to Rs. 600,000 annually from kiwi farming.

The kiwi produced in his farm is marketed both inside and outside Bhojpur. Kiwi is sold in the market at Rs 250 to Rs 300 per kg. With this new turn in his profession, Rai is optimistic about the future.
