EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen visited Amrit Kosh, Nepal's first human milk bank.

This facility was opened in August 2022 by the Government of Nepal with the support of the EU and UNICEF to benefit premature, low-birthweight, and other at-risk babies through access to life-saving breastmilk.

Mothers who have surplus breastmilk can donate it to the Amrit Kosh, where it is screened, processed, and stored for use by other mothers and their infants who are in need. This ensures that even the most vulnerable infants have access to the benefits of breastmilk.

Urpilainen also interacted with donor mothers and receiving parents. "I was moved and touched by their stories and inspired by their commitment to improving the well-being of children," she said, praising the efforts in supporting this important initiative. She emphasized the EU's commitment to promoting maternal and child nutrition in Nepal.
