18th kimff to go virtual

The 18th iteration of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (kimff) will take place virtually to maintain social distance due to COVID-19 from 10-14 December.

 Organized by Himal Association, this edition will emerge with the tagline ‘Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya' that means ‘Against Despair, Towards Hope’, which will reflect the goal of moving forward with hope and faith in the face of the current pandemic, as per press statement issued by the organizer.

The festival will screen 18 films from 15 countries in the international section, and 12 films including short films and documentaries under 'Nepal Panorama'. Moreover, it also features a 'virtual' interaction and dialogue program with filmmakers and speakers.

Kimff 2020 will be kicked-off with the screening of celebrated Bhutanese film director Khyenste Norbu Rinpoche's new film 'Looking for a Lady with Fangs and a Mustache'.

The three-member jury comprises American documentary filmmaker Julie Bridgham, Swiss journalist, and filmmaker Lisa Rusley and Nepali writer Nayan Raj Pandey will select the best three films from the international section and the best story (fiction) and best documentary films from the Nepal Panorama section.

The top three prizes are Rs 200,000, Rs. 150,000, Rs 100,000 for the international competition sponsored by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), ), HIMFF (Himalaya International Mountain Film of China), Fredi-Ursulla Wohland from Switzerland, respectively.

Likewise, the best Nepali story film and the best documentary will be awarded Rs 100,000 and Rs 75,000 respectively.

Meanwhile, a Nepali translation of the book 'Nepali Music Makers' by the late Peter J Karthak, published by Himal Kitab, will also be launched, read the press statement
