Bala Chaturdashi is a Hindu and Buddhist religious festival where followers pray for their deceased relatives.

The festival begins at dusk when worshipers light oil lamps. They chant spells to stay up all night and ensure that the lamp continued to burn. The next day, at dawn, they bathe in the Bagmati River and pray to Pashupatinath for eternal peace for the dead.

Devotees pass by dropping satbij, a mixture of seven sacred seeds in these temples, and 108 Shiva Lingas present inside Pashupatinath temple premises. These seeds are placed in the memory of the loved ones who have passed away. It is believed that by performing these rituals during Bala Chaturdashi, we can ensure a better place in heaven for our deceased loved ones. It is also believed to help calm the souls of the deceased who had not received proper ritualistic farewell during their funeral
