Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine which is being administered to the Nepali children of 5 to 12-year age group has been 91 percent effective and safe, according to the Family Welfare Division (FWD).

FWD public health officer Sanjay Mahaseth confirmed this at an interaction on 'promotion of COVID-19 vaccines and infection prevention and control' organised here Friday. The event was organized jointly by the Department of Health Services and the Health Journalists Forum Nepal.

The government will launch the vaccination campaign across the country since June 23 wherein children between 5 and 12-year age group get the vaccine.

In the first phase, the campaign will run in 27 districts from June 23 to 29 while second dose will be administered from July 18 to 24.

Similarly, in the second phase, the campaign will be launched in 50 districts from August 21 to 27. The second dose will be given from September 12 to 17.

The children can access the facility at nearby school, he said. A trained health worker will be stationed at a vaccination center to ensure treatment to the vaccinated children in case of any post-vaccination side effects.

"In case of vaccinated children showing side effects post-vaccination, they will get treatment on the spot. One may vomit, develop rashes on the vaccinated area and complain of a headache post-vaccination," Mahaseth added.

The vaccination will be provided on the basis of name and grades of children and their identity cards specifying their age provided by the respective school or their age provided by their parents themselves.

On the occasion, General Director at the Department, Dipendra Raman Singh, urged all parents to get their children vaccinated against the virus as the vaccine is 'safe and effective'.
