1 million tonnes of garbage produced per year in Nepal

As much as one million tonnes of garbage come out of residences and business areas annually in the country, according to statistics released by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Sunday.

Among those, 386,690 tonnes of wastage are emitted from residential areas while 245,884 tonnes are from business. Furthermore, 103,244 tonnes of garbages are released from educational institutions and 94,392 tonnes from industrial areas.

Likewise, the health sector contributed to the generation of 101,507 tonnes while 66,220 tonnes of garbage come out from other areas, the Bureau revealed.

A total of 389,983 tonnes of emitted garbage are sent to landfill sites, 315,069 tonnes are dumped on riverbanks and riversides and 22,075 tonnes of garbage are burned down.

Director of the Bureau, Sushil Kumar Sharma, shared that plastic, metal and paper wastages amounting to 8,690 tonnes can be recycled. Record keeping of the wastages at the local, provincial, and federal levels was not up to international standards, according to the Bureau's report.

The report suggests capacity enhancement of the professionals and stakeholders working in the waste management sector to make statistics on the classification, production and use and reuse in accordance with the international standards.

The Bureau conducted a survey on wastage production, collection, and management in 2019.
