Cleaning up the streets for 12 years

We take a look behind the noble cause that is the street cleaning campaign conducted across the valley for the past 12 years

While the valley deals with the latest threat of the newest wave of the virus that has hit homes and is spreading rapidly, a few enterprising men and women have taken the step to maintain sanitation levels across the valley through participating in valley-wide cleaning campaigns.

Having begun from the eve of Tuesday and continuing for a month, the people involved in the sanitation campaign cleaned the area surrounding Ranipokhari. In conversation with Rajman Manav, Chief campaigner of the campaign he states his philosophies behind the campaign and the need for sanitation, he says that if he doesn't litter in his place and others do the same-cleanliness isn't hard to achieve at all. He also shared that similar campaigns had already been conducted in 201 countries around the world, recently launching in South Asia.

A Kritipur resident Manav along with his wife Sushila Maharjan began the campaign 12 years ago. Beginning from his local area in Kritipur, the campaign has expanded unto the entire valley today also spreading to nearby cities such as Biratnagar, Janakpur. In his cleaning campaign he’s also gone to Dhaka, Bangladesh conducting his cleaning campaign there for 2 months.


The Ranipokhari area cleaning aided by the Police and the military began a month ago and shall now move on to other places in the valley. They soon plan to submit a proposal to the Prime Minister and the Metropolitan office regarding fines of littering within the valley.

With the goal of making Nepal garbage free, their long term vision pertains to that of making Nepal liter free by 2024.Threough proper coordination between local bodies and the campaign volunteers the campaign has lofty goals that the public wishes are fulfilled.
