The Nepal Army (NA) has demanded the registration of vehicles obtained from the UN Peacekeeping Mission and the Chinese government.

The NA has sought support in the registration of vehicles that were brought back to the country after completing the peacekeeping missions and the ones gifted by the Chinese government at different times.

It was shared in the second quarterly progress-sharing meeting of the Ministry of Defense that a report commissioned by the ministry itself to study the registration of the vehicles was also received.

A request was made to the Ministry of Forest and Environment for an amendment to the vehicular emission standards in connection with the registration of vehicles obtained from China. As informed, no progress has been so far reported to this effect.

The Ministry of Defense has been exploring different ways for the registration and proper use of 205 vehicles NA possessed.

The vehicles have been remaining idle in lack of the proper ways for registration.

In the meeting, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Prabhuram Sharma said, "There is a problem in the registration of the vehicles returned after the UN peacekeeping missions and obtained from the Chinese government on different occasions. Registration should in no way be protracted".

Noting that various standards regarding registration of vehicles that were not procured by the NA but received as aid should not prevail, he said the registration and use of vehicles returned from the UN mission that was already in use in different parts of the globe would not inflict any effects to the environment of the country. ---
