The members in the National Assembly (NA) today aired mixed views over the government policies and programmes for the fiscal year 2023-24.

Lawmakers from the ruling parties approved the policies and programmes while those from the opposition termed them 'irrelevant'.

Sumitra BC said the policies and programmes in an unusual situation came as a 'customary document' while Hariram Chaudhary, Bhagawati Neupane and Indira Devi Gautam said the policies and programmes failed to assimilate the contemporary situation.

Dil Kumari Rawal Thapa assessed the policies and programmes lacked gravity of the time, accusing them of bypassing substantive programmes aiming to promote inclusion and just and proportional development.

Krishna Prasad Poudel demanded the government focus on discouraging youth plight in the budget and on increasing agricultural production. As he said, 100,000 hectares of arable land remain uncultivated in the country.

The lawmakers from ruling parties said the policies and programmes were compatible with time and they should be implemented effectively. Taraman Swar said the policies and programmes had attempted to address the nation's economic issues.

Earlier, Nar Bahadur Bist, Kamala Pant, Jayanti Devi Rai, Kumar Dasaundi, Durga Kumari Gurung, Goma Devi Timilsina and Mohammed Khalid, were among those taking part in the deliberations.

Likewise, NA Chair Ganesh Prasad Timilsina took time to complain that the government did not take ownership of agreements reached between the two sides during his recent visit to Russia.

The NA shall meet again at 1:01 pm on May 23.
