NHRC urges for effective investigation of rape cases

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for an impartial and effective investigation into the rape and sexual incidents and for justice for the victims and legal action against the perpetrators. A press release issued by the spokesperson of the commission, Dr. Tikaram Bhattarai, said that the judicial rights and protection of the victims of sexual violence and rape should be ensured.

"The Commission urges the Government of Nepal to protect victims and witnesses of sexual and rape incidents, to provide psychosocial counseling and compensation to the victims and to bring the accused to justice as soon as possible." the statement said.

Recently, incidents of sexual violence and rape have been becoming public in different parts of the country including Kathmandu. The commission is also monitoring the incident based on the complaint. The Commission has also held discussions with the officers of Nepal Police and the police officers involved in the investigation regarding the work done by Nepal Police and the challenges seen in the investigation of the incidents of sexual violence and rape that have become public.

Commission member Lily Thapa said that the role of Nepal Police should be effective in ensuring the right of the victims to get justice in a timely manner through impartial and effective investigation into the incidents of sexual violence and rape and directed to bring the accused to justice. Deputy Inspector General of Police Uttam Raj Subedi informed that the police is investigating the incidents related to violence against women. Nepal's constitution and law states that acts of sexual violence are punishable by law, and that victims of such incidents have the right to compensation according to law.
