Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol have reached Banchare Danda twice in the last five days after locals obstructed the dumping of garbage at Banchare Danda, a dumping site in the Kathmandu Valley. After the trucks carrying garbage were blocked from going there, various places in the capital Kathmandu have become foul smelling.

At Banchare Danda, the locals had made various demands to Mayor Shah. At that time, Mayor Shah said that the chemical can be sprayed within a week so that there is no odor in the garbage dumped at the dumping site. Mayor Shah, however, said that the trucks carrying chemicals should not be stopped. Such chemicals are also being sprayed in abattoirs in Kathmandu. Mayor Shah has estimated that there will be no odor after spraying the chemical in the abattoir.

At present, garbage of 23 municipalities including Kathmandu is being dumped on Banchare Danda. But so far garbage has not been separated and thrown away. For this, it is necessary to go door to door and raise public awareness, said Mayor Shah. The work of raising public awareness has been done by Kathmandu.

He said that it would take three months to build a 12 km long road to the dumping site. Informing that the contract of that road will be opened today, Mayor Shah said that it is an upgrade of the road which should be made to run for twelve months. He made it clear that the problem of garbage would not be solved politically.
