Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal (JSP) Chair Mahantha Thakur has registered a writ petition against the Election Commission's decision to give legitimacy to the party faction led by Upendra Yadav.

In a writ petition filed at the Supreme Court (SC) today, Thakur demanded the annulment of the decisions to grant party legitimacy to the Yadav faction and allow them to register a new party.

He also demanded the apex court issue an interim order to stay implementation of EC's decisions until and unless the writ petition is settled.

The EC on July 26 had granted party legitimacy to the Yadav faction possessing 34 members by counting heads of JSP executive committee members. In its decision, EC said the Thakur side having 16 executive committee members can register a new party as per the existing rule.

Noting that EC's decisions have rendered them with injustice, chairperson Thakur demanded recognition to the executive committee members he had changed on last June 15 and on that basis the party's legitimacy should be determined.

With the implementation of EC's decisions, their party would split and the relevance of party central leadership would come to an end, Thakur claimed.
