The Election Commission has started preparations to hold local-level elections in May. This information was given by Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya at the inaugural function of the workshop on election operation and management organized for women journalists.
He informed that work has been started with the aim of holding the election in April next year as the elected term of the local people's representative ends in April. Thapaliya said, "The commission is serious about holding the election by April 6, 2079 BS and appointing new people's representatives on time. The commission is preparing to make a recommendation to the government of Nepal to fix the date of local elections soon."
He informed that the five-year term of 753 local level people's representatives will be completed by March 19, 2022. Stating that the local government cannot be imagined to be vacant as there is no legal provision to extend the term of local level people's representatives to date, he said that local level elections should be held by May 3.
Thapaliya said that the commission has entered the process of handing over new people's representatives and new leadership by holding elections to all the state assemblies, the house of representatives, and the posts of president and vice-president by March. He said that the commission has now started its election-related activities by training women journalists with the intention of entering the eve of the election. "If the election is fast, the rulers will be fast. If the delegates are fast, we will get rules faster, so he urged us to think about this." He requested the media persons to help in keeping in view the values of the election keeping in view the bad propaganda and false news during the election.
