Kathmandu District Court launches 'family court'

 The District Court Kathmandu launched the 'family court' beginning today.

Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha inaugurated the facility amidst a programme here today.

On the occasion, the Chief Justice said the bench was established within the district court as per his plans he presented during a parliamentary hearing as part of the procedures for his appointment as the Chief Justice.

This marks the first ever establishment of the family court in Nepal's judiciary, according to the Chief Justice who hoped that it would help settle cases concerning children and women promptly. He called for all-side cooperation to make it an effective body within the judiciary.

As he said, the court will prioritise providing swift services over matters concerning women's claim for share on family property and other family issues, and this facility will be extended to Bhaktapur and Lalitpur in the days to come. In the beginning, the tribunal will have two regular benches.

The court aims to enhance citizen's access to justice and ensure proper judicial services in accordance with the fourth five-year strategic plan of the judiciary.

According to the decision of the Supreme Court's Case Management Committee based on the plans of Chief Justice, cases related to division of family property, establishment of family relations, domestic violence, child custody and special care will be heard in the court.
