The number of girls giving birth before 20-year has decreased in Jumla district, thanks to interventions of awareness raising programmes and increasing trend of girls' access to education.

Acting Chief of Public Health Service Office, Jumla, Prem Sumai, said that the number of girls giving birth before 20-year was reduced last fiscal year compared to the previous years.

In the Fiscal Year 2077/078 BS, a total of 860 teen girls gave birth to their babies before 20 in the district as shared by the Office. However, such numbers decreased to 310 after two years in the Fiscal Year 2079/080 BS, Sumai added.

Of the 310 teen girls giving birth before 20-year, 127 are from Chandannath Municipality, which is the highest amongst the local levels in the district. The Office said that Sinja Rural Municipality had the least number of new-moms before 20-year in the last fiscal year. Only five girls 20-year olds bore babies in Sinja.

However, the child marriage is still a serious problem in the district.
