Commission on indigenous nationalities to conduct study on rights

The Women and Social Committee of the House of Representatives have directed the Commission on Indigenous Nationalities to conduct study and make documentation of the rights of indigenous people.

The committee meeting held in Singha Durbar on Thursday underscored the need for doing research and documentation for the promotion and protection of the rights of indigenous nationalities.

Committee president Niru Devi Pal viewed the commission as responsible for elevating the rights and status of aborigine people. It is time to restore the originality of aborigine people, she stressed.

Similarly, member Ganga Chaudhari Satgauwa argued that custom-based practices should be given legal recognition. Also speaking on the occasion were Durga Bahadur Raut, Laxmi Pariyar, Amrita Thapa, Sita BK, Kumari Meche, Bimala Bishwokarma, Devendra Gautam, Shiva Mandal and Hira Gurung.

Commission Chairperson Ram Bahadur Thapamagar presented a report on issues and challenges of indigenous nationalities in Nepal.
