The government will not immediately extend the deadline for filing complaints of rape and sexual violence.

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Govinda Sharma, while replying to a question raised by the lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Monday, said that the time limit provision in the existing law could not be reconsidered immediately.

He said that the deadline cannot be reconsidered at the moment. "The government is serious about the sentiments of the people and how the victims are unable to get justice due to deadlines. Therefore, as soon as the public debate on this issue starts, the government has asked the Nepal Law Commission to conduct a study on this issue,” he said.

Minister Sharma said that the law commission would report based on the precedents set by the Supreme Court, the time limit provisions of different countries and the social environment of Nepal and only then the government could reconsider.

"As soon as that report comes, we will discuss it and make necessary amendments in the law," he said.
