Minister for Physical Infrastructures and Transport, Prakash Jwala, took stock of the latest condition of Kanti Highway on Friday.

The reconstruction works of an old highway to link the Kathmandu Valley with Tarai/Madhes are very slow.

The government has allocated the budget of Rs 3.78 billion to widen and blacktop the road. The roadway with 79-km length has now seven-km left for blacktopping and reconstruction.

Among the remaining parts, Lalitpur has five km and Makwanpur two km.

It is challenging to continue upgrading works in the present time due to recurring rain causing landslides in many parts of the roadway.

It is said there is a resource crunch for building a retention wall for the roadway. Similarly, random construction of feeder ways has caused problems in managing drainage. Due to fragile topography, even the recently constructed road is receiving damage.

During the field inspection, Minister Jwala, however, assured that the government and ministry would not let shortage of resources to manage the Kanti Highway. He also directed the construction companies to complete the remaining tasks on time.

Minister Jwala was accompanied by ministry secretary Keshav Kumar Sharma and project related officials.
