Only 6.6% of Nepali women journalists cover foreign affairs in Nepal. 85.6% have a desire to do so.
In support of a free press that represents the many voices of Nepal, the U.S. Embassy worked with Media Advocacy Group to survey journalists across the country regarding the status of Nepali women journalists covering foreign affairs.
Social pressure, discrimination, unequal pay, harassment, insufficient training, and lack of English proficiency are some of the barriers identified in the survey as reasons why there is a gender discrepancy in foreign affairs reporting.
Ambassador Thompson joined Minister for Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma to launch the survey report. To further support a sustainable pathway for women to enter the career, the U.S. Embassy with Media Advocacy Group is supporting fellowships at media outlets throughout the year.
