Hatuwagadhi rural municipality in Bhojpur has constructed over 30 artificial ponds under its ' one ward, one pond' programme.

The programme is said to have been implemented successfully. The local government came with the programme of building public ponds in response to the dwindling local water resources.

Rural municipality chairperson Prem Kumar Rai said they aim to protect water resources along with supporting irrigation through the pond construction programme. "We hope to tackle water crisis issues through the construction of ponds and see its sustainable impact on water management and environmental adaptation. Ponds construction works go on in this fiscal year as well."

He added the local government has taken this initiative significantly in terms of the effort to conserve the environment. "It plays a vital role in recharging the earth's natural water resources."

According to rural municipality chief administrative officer, Mahesh Niroula, the construction of artificial ponds has been in the regular calendar of the local government for over a couple of years. Nine ponds were built last fiscal year and Rs 100,000 is allotted for the construction of one pond.
