Nepali Congress re-election to start at 3:30 pm

Voting for the post of Nepali Congress President will be held again under the 14th General Convention. In the election held on Monday, no candidate for the post of chairperson got 51 percent of the votes. Voting will take place at the National Assembly Hall and Bhrikuti Mandap.

Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) is preparing to hold re-polling from 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm today as none of the candidates could get 51 percent of the total votes cast, said committee coordinator Gopal Krishna Ghimire. The counting of votes for the post of chairman was completed this morning.

Prime Minister and current president Deuba polled 2,258 votes while his nearest rival Dr. Shekhar Koirala polled 1,702 votes. Former General Secretary Singh received 371 votes, Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi got 250 votes and Kalyan Gurung got 22 votes.

A total of 4,679 out of 4,743 voters had cast their votes in the polling held from Monday morning till night. A total of 76 votes were disqualified in the election. According to the Congress constitution, it is mandatory to get more than 50 percent of the votes cast for the election. If for the first time any candidate does not get more than 50 percent of the votes, re-voting will take place between the two candidates who get the most votes. In re-polling, the candidate who gets the majority will win.
